ABB Files Patent for Subsea Power Collection System with Distributed Transformer Units

Time:2026-05-08 Browse: 0

According to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), ABB Switzerland Ltd. has filed a patent titled “Subsea Power Collection System with Distributed Transformer Units”, published under number CN121713347A with an application date of March 2024.

The patent describes a power collection system designed to gather electricity from multiple offshore generation units, comprising a three-phase subnetwork and a subsea power substation. The subnetwork features power input points facing the generation units and a shared three-phase power output point, which is connected to the subsea power substation. The secondary side of the substation is configured to supply electricity to end consumers.

A key feature of the invention is that the subsea substation includes three single-phase transformers, each housed within its own enclosure. These enclosures are designed to rest on the seabed and can be individually lifted to the surface if required. Each phase of the power output point is connected to the primary side of the corresponding single-phase transformer, allowing for distributed power conversion and flexible installation.

This patent highlights ABB’s commitment to innovative offshore power solutions, addressing the challenges of subsea power collection, modular deployment, and maintenance flexibility, while supporting the growth of offshore renewable energy projects.
