ABB Files Patent for Teaching System Enabling Robot Motion Without Additional Calibration

Time:2026-05-09 Browse: 0

ABB Switzerland has filed a patent with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) for an innovative teaching system and method, published under CN122003315A with an application date of October 2023. The development reflects ABB’s continued focus on simplifying robotic programming and enhancing industrial automation efficiency.

The patented system includes a robot and a teaching device, each equipped with corresponding flanges. The robot flange is coupled to a first workpiece, while the teaching device flange is coupled to a second workpiece. Both workpieces and flanges are designed to be identical, enabling the teaching device to move along a defined path according to a set of parameters.

Crucially, the robot can replicate the same path using the same parameters without requiring any additional calibration between the teaching device and the robot. This eliminates one of the most time-consuming and error-prone steps in traditional robot programming. The patent also describes a method for implementing this teaching system in industrial environments.

This innovation simplifies robotic deployment in manufacturing and industrial settings, reducing setup time and increasing precision. By allowing robots to mirror the movements of a teaching device automatically, ABB’s approach enhances usability and efficiency, supporting faster and more reliable automation processes.
