ABB Switzerland has filed a patent with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) for an innovative painting robot, published under CN121988477A with an application date of October 2025. The development reflects ABB’s ongoing focus on improving industrial automation and product quality in surface finishing processes.
The patented painting robot is designed to maintain high coating quality even in areas with surface defects. Key components of the system include:
A painting head unit equipped with a painting nozzle.

A 3D scanner to capture three-dimensional coating data from the painted surfaces.
A control unit that uses the 3D scan data to guide the movements of the painting head and robotic arm.
When the system detects a coating defect in the scanned data, the control unit initiates an additional painting procedure. During this process, the painting head adjusts the nozzle position and precisely sprays paint onto the defect areas, effectively correcting imperfections and ensuring uniform coating quality.
