ABB Ltd., the Swiss industrial technology leader, has filed a patent for a method and device to enhance control of belt grinding operations. The patent, titled “Method and Device for Controlling the Grinding Process of Belt Grinding Equipment” (CN121568810A), was filed in July 2023 with the Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration.
The innovation addresses a longstanding challenge in belt grinding: achieving precise alignment between the grinding belt and the surface of the workpiece. Traditional belt grinding processes often rely heavily on operator experience, which can lead to inconsistent results, excessive wear, or surface defects.
Grinding Path Acquisition
The method generates a detailed grinding path across the surface of the workpiece, consisting of multiple grinding path points (CF) that guide the movement of the belt grinding equipment.
Contact Point Selection
Leveraging an established model of the belt grinding system, specific contact points (CP) on the grinding belt surface are identified. These points account for belt geometry, surface curvature, and grinding parameters.
Alignment of Contact and Path Points
During operation, the system moves the belt along the predetermined grinding path while aligning each contact point with the corresponding path point. This ensures precise, consistent contact between the belt and the workpiece throughout the process.
Enhanced Precision: Automated alignment reduces errors and improves surface finish.
Increased Efficiency: Reduces reliance on manual operations, enabling faster, repeatable processes.
Versatility: Capable of handling complex or irregular surfaces.
Reduced Wear and Damage: Uniform belt contact prolongs both belt and equipment life.
This technology is particularly suited for precision mechanical component manufacturing, metal and composite surface finishing, and automated production lines requiring consistent high-quality grinding results.
With this patent, ABB demonstrates its continued commitment to industrial automation and advanced process control, providing manufacturers with tools to enhance precision, efficiency, and product quality in grinding operations.
