ABB has expanded its industrial variable frequency drive (VFD) portfolio with a new IP66/UL 4X protection series designed for operation in demanding environments. The new models are suitable for applications across food processing, water treatment, rooftop HVAC systems, and other industries requiring robust equipment performance.
The release covers three ABB VFD series:
ACS580 – General-purpose drives for industrial applications
ACH580 – HVAC-specific drives for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
ACQ580 – Water treatment-specific drives for pumping and dosing systems
These drives are engineered to withstand rain, salt spray, high humidity, dust, chemical exposure, and high-pressure washing, eliminating the need for additional protective enclosures in harsh conditions.

The IP66/UL 4X-rated drives are fully sealed and built to operate reliably in extreme conditions, providing energy-efficient motor control even in environments that traditionally require cabinet protection. ABB reports up to 25% energy savings compared to standard VFDs under such conditions.
ACS580: Suitable for food and beverage, dairy, bakery, meat processing, aquaculture, and chemical cleaning scenarios
ACQ580: Designed for wastewater and infrastructure applications, including sedimentation tanks, pump stations, and chemical dosing systems
ACH580: Expanded protection for HVAC applications, such as rooftop units, cooling towers, and outdoor ventilation systems
Optional Bluetooth control panels allow technicians to perform remote commissioning, monitoring, and troubleshooting via ABB Drivetune and Drive Composer software. This minimizes on-site personnel exposure to live equipment, improving safety during maintenance operations.
The drives include C2-class EMC filters and optimized DC reactors. Two expansion slots are provided for fieldbus adapters or I/O modules, facilitating integration with industrial automation networks and control systems.
ABB’s IP66/UL 4X VFD launch reflects key trends in industrial automation:
Growing demand for high-durability, distributed motor control systems
Integration of communications and safety features natively into drives
Simplified installation and reduced total system cost
Adaptation for energy-efficient operation in harsh and wet environments
By leveraging a fully compatible platform across protection classes and power ratings, ABB enables cross-industry deployment, streamlining HMI use and software compatibility for system integrators.
The new IP66/UL 4X drives are now in mass production and available across multiple power ratings, suitable for a wide range of industrial, water treatment, and infrastructure projects.
