ABB has announced the release of its latest software version, ABB Ability Field Information Manager (FIM) 3.5, a vendor-independent platform designed to streamline firmware updates and lifecycle management for industrial field devices. The new release targets process industries where large-scale, multi-vendor device environments require efficient maintenance, improved cybersecurity compliance, and reduced downtime.
ABB positions FIM 3.5 as a centralized and open solution that enables automated firmware updates across complex industrial asset networks. By reducing manual intervention, the system is designed to significantly shorten maintenance cycles, transforming update processes that traditionally take several days into operations that can be completed within hours.
One of the key enhancements in FIM 3.5 is expanded support for a wide range of industrial communication protocols. The platform is compatible with HART, HART-IP, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, and ASi-5, ensuring seamless integration across both legacy and modern field devices.
In addition, ABB Ability FIM 3.5 supports emerging industrial standards such as Ethernet-APL and PA Profile 4.02. This broad compatibility enables operators to manage heterogeneous device fleets while maintaining full interoperability across different vendors and system generations.

ABB has also strengthened integration capabilities with its core automation platforms, including ABB Ability System 800xA and ABB Ability Symphony Plus. Through this integration, users can access unified functions for device configuration, diagnostics, and maintenance within existing control environments.
This approach allows industrial operators to centralize asset management activities, improving operational visibility and reducing engineering workload across distributed production sites.
The new FIM version leverages FDI (Field Device Integration) and OPC UA standards to facilitate secure data transmission from field devices to cloud-based monitoring systems. This capability supports real-time condition monitoring and enhances predictive maintenance strategies by providing continuous access to device health data.
By enabling more reliable data exchange between field assets and higher-level analytics platforms, ABB Ability FIM 3.5 helps industrial operators reduce unplanned downtime and optimize maintenance scheduling.
Cybersecurity remains a core focus in the new release. ABB Ability FIM 3.5 is designed in accordance with the IEC 62443 industrial cybersecurity framework, supporting secure configuration and firmware management in critical infrastructure environments.
The platform aligns with ABB’s broader cybersecurity architecture, helping organizations strengthen defense-in-depth strategies while ensuring compliance with international industrial security standards.
With increasing digitalization in process industries, the need for standardized, secure, and efficient firmware management tools continues to grow. ABB Ability FIM 3.5 addresses these challenges by offering a unified platform that reduces operational complexity, enhances security compliance, and improves asset lifecycle efficiency.
The solution is particularly relevant for sectors such as oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, and water treatment, where large-scale distributed control systems require continuous updates and strict reliability standards.
