Schneider Electric has agreed to acquire Norwegian industrial software company Cognite in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $3.1 billion, marking a major step in Schneider Electric’s strategy to strengthen its industrial artificial intelligence (AI), data management, and digital transformation capabilities.
The French energy management and automation leader announced that it will acquire all outstanding shares of privately held Cognite from Aker ASA and other investors.
The acquisition is expected to further enhance Schneider Electric’s position in the rapidly growing industrial AI market, where manufacturers are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence technologies to improve operational efficiency, optimize production processes, and strengthen global competitiveness.
Schneider Electric CEO Olivier Blum said that Cognite has developed a “true industrial-grade artificial intelligence platform” capable of transforming complex operational data into valuable business advantages.
Founded in Norway, Cognite specializes in industrial data platforms and AI solutions designed to help companies unlock value from large-scale industrial information.
By combining Cognite’s industrial data capabilities with Schneider Electric’s existing digital ecosystem, the company aims to provide more powerful solutions for:
Smart manufacturing
Industrial data analytics
Predictive maintenance
Energy optimization
Asset performance management
Schneider Electric plans to integrate Cognite with its industrial software business AVEVA, creating a stronger software platform for industrial customers worldwide.

The acquisition comes as Schneider Electric continues to benefit from global demand for AI-related infrastructure.
Over the past year, Schneider Electric’s share price has increased significantly as investors recognize the company’s growing role in supporting artificial intelligence development.
Beyond industrial automation, Schneider Electric has become increasingly involved in providing:
Data center power management solutions
Cooling infrastructure
Energy efficiency technologies
Critical power systems
These solutions support the computing infrastructure required for AI development, including high-performance data processing and large-scale data storage.
Schneider Electric is currently one of France’s largest publicly listed companies, with a market capitalization of approximately €165 billion.
The Schneider Electric and Cognite transaction reflects a broader trend across Europe, where industrial companies are accelerating AI adoption to improve productivity and maintain competitiveness.
Major industrial technology companies, including Siemens, Dassault Systèmes, and ABB, are also integrating artificial intelligence into their automation platforms and industrial software solutions.
Manufacturers are increasingly using AI technologies to achieve:
Higher production efficiency
Reduced operating costs
Better equipment reliability
More sustainable industrial operations
European manufacturers are facing increasing pressure from rising labor costs, global competition, and the need for greater operational efficiency.
Industrial AI is becoming one of the key technologies helping companies close productivity gaps and maintain manufacturing capabilities in Europe.
A report released by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in May indicated that approximately $1 trillion worth of manufacturing activity could face relocation risks from Western and Northern Europe if productivity challenges are not addressed.
Marcus Lorenz, Managing Director at Boston Consulting Group, highlighted that the core challenge for European manufacturing is whether factories located in high-cost regions can achieve sufficient productivity improvements to remain profitable.
Industry experts believe Europe has unique advantages in industrial AI due to its strong manufacturing foundation, engineering expertise, and accumulated industrial knowledge.
Laruca Ragabu, partner at investment firm Eurazeo, noted that increasing cost pressures combined with Europe’s industrial expertise create favorable conditions for industrial AI development.
She emphasized that when mature industrial systems face challenges from rising costs and declining competitiveness, technological transformation becomes essential.
The acquisition of Cognite represents a significant milestone in Schneider Electric’s evolution from an energy management company into a broader provider of digital industrial solutions.
By combining Cognite’s industrial AI capabilities, AVEVA’s software ecosystem, and Schneider Electric’s global automation expertise, the company aims to accelerate the adoption of AI-powered solutions across manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure industries.
As industrial companies worldwide move toward smarter, more connected, and more sustainable operations, industrial AI is expected to become a key driver of the next generation of automation and digital transformation.
