ABB has reached a new milestone in its research and development activities in China. ABB Xinhui Low Voltage Switchgear Co., Ltd. has been officially approved to establish a Guangdong Provincial Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base, strengthening its collaboration with Xi'an Jiaotong University in advanced electrical engineering research and talent development.
The unveiling ceremony was held at ABB's Xinhui facility in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, on October 28, 2026. Government representatives, university researchers, ABB executives, and employee representatives attended the event.
The new research platform is designed to promote collaboration between industry and academia, with a particular focus on key technologies related to low-voltage circuit breakers and electrical distribution equipment. Through joint research and postdoctoral training programs, ABB aims to accelerate the development and industrial application of innovative technologies.
China is ABB's second-largest global market. With more than 120 years of business operations in the country, ABB continues to invest in local engineering capabilities, product development, and technical innovation.
ABB's Xinhui facility has been operating in Jiangmen for more than 30 years and has steadily expanded its research and development capabilities. The facility now has a team of more than 110 engineers, with expertise covering product design, engineering validation, testing, and localization.
A major part of its technical infrastructure is an approximately 4,000-square-meter laboratory accredited by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS).
The laboratory supports both standard product verification and customized testing requirements. It also uses a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to manage testing procedures, equipment, and personnel digitally, improving process transparency, efficiency, and traceability.
These existing R&D resources provide an important foundation for the newly established postdoctoral innovation platform.

The postdoctoral innovation practice base is jointly established by ABB Xinhui Low Voltage Switchgear Co., Ltd. and Xi'an Jiaotong University, one of China's leading engineering and research universities.
Under the cooperation framework, both parties will work on research projects addressing technical challenges in low-voltage electrical equipment, particularly low-voltage circuit breakers and related solutions.
The collaboration will bring together university research expertise and ABB's industrial engineering experience. Postdoctoral researchers will have access to research funding, laboratory facilities, experimental resources, and supporting services provided by ABB.
The program is intended to encourage forward-looking research into key industry technologies while strengthening the connection between academic research, engineering validation, and commercial product development.
According to information released by local authorities, the joint platform also focuses on low-voltage switching equipment technologies related to the new energy sector, reflecting the growing technical requirements associated with evolving power distribution systems.
Sergio Silvestri, Senior Vice President of ABB Electrification Smart Power in Asia, said the platform would provide a practical cooperation framework for researchers, universities, and ABB engineering teams.
By bringing academic research closer to real industrial applications, ABB expects to gain a deeper understanding of technical challenges faced by customers and accelerate the development of solutions addressing actual market requirements.
Massimiliano Cifalitti, Global President of ABB Electrification Smart Power, also highlighted the importance of local partnerships and talent development. He noted that combining academic expertise with ABB's engineering capabilities and market experience would help strengthen technological foundations, develop future industry talent, and translate research into practical customer solutions.
The establishment of ABB's Guangdong Provincial Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base represents another step in strengthening China's research and development capabilities in low-voltage electrical equipment.
For the electrical engineering and industrial automation sectors, continued investment in circuit breaker research, testing infrastructure, and engineering talent is important for improving product performance, reliability, and technological competitiveness.
As power distribution systems continue to evolve, low-voltage circuit breakers and switching equipment remain essential components for electrical protection, distribution, and control in industrial and commercial applications.
ABB's collaboration with Xi'an Jiaotong University is expected to support further research into these technologies while promoting closer cooperation between universities and industrial manufacturers.
The initiative also demonstrates ABB's continued commitment to local innovation, technical development, and long-term investment in China's electrical equipment industry.
