Schneider Electric Secures Patent for Adaptive Circuit Breaker Technology Using Dynamic Electromagne

Beijing, April 15, 2026Schneider Electric, a global leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced that its industrial subsidiary has been granted a new invention patent by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) (Patent Publication No.: CN224123320U). The patented technology introduces an adaptive electromagnetic force control system for circuit breakers, significantly improving operational reliability and extending equipment lifespan in low-voltage power distribution systems.

The patent application was filed in January 2025 and has now been officially granted following a full examination process.

Addressing a Longstanding Industry Challenge

In conventional electromagnetic circuit breakers, the closing operation is typically driven by a fixed-power electromagnetic coil. This approach can lead to excessive electromagnetic force during the closing phase, resulting in high-impact collisions between mechanical contacts and the iron core.

Over time, such mechanical stress may cause accelerated wear, contact instability, and switching delays, ultimately reducing device lifespan and increasing maintenance costs in electrical distribution networks.

Adaptive Closed-Loop PWM Control System

The patented solution introduces a closed-loop pulse-width modulation (PWM) control architecture composed of mechanical contacts, an electromagnetic coil, a drive circuit, and a controller.

The controller continuously monitors the input voltage of the drive circuit and dynamically calculates PWM signals based on real-time voltage variations. The duty cycle is adaptively adjusted within a defined range, enabling precise regulation of coil current and electromagnetic force output.

This real-time adaptive control ensures that the system delivers only the required level of electromagnetic force throughout the switching cycle.

Dual-Stage Intelligent Operation

The innovation enables a two-stage optimization of breaker operation:

  • Initial closing phase: Provides sufficient electromagnetic force to ensure fast and reliable contact engagement

  • Post-engagement phase: Automatically reduces electromagnetic force to a maintenance level, minimizing mechanical stress and wear

This approach maintains switching reliability while significantly reducing mechanical impact and energy consumption.

According to internal testing, the technology can reduce contact wear by more than 40%, while also improving energy efficiency and extending overall device service life.

Advancing Smart Power Distribution Systems

A technical representative from Schneider Electric stated that contact durability is a critical factor determining the reliability and stability of power distribution systems.

By integrating digital control algorithms with traditional electromagnetic mechanisms, the patented solution enhances both operational reliability and mechanical longevity, supporting reduced maintenance costs and improved system continuity across industrial, infrastructure, building, and data center applications.

Strengthening Schneider Electric’s Innovation Portfolio

This latest patent further strengthens Schneider Electric’s global intellectual property portfolio in low-voltage switchgear and intelligent power distribution technologies. It also supports the industry’s transition from mechanically driven systems toward digitally controlled and intelligent electrical infrastructure.
