This new facility marks a transition in Schneider Electric’s local R&D capabilities from application-level innovation focused on product development to platform-level innovation, capable of end-to-end local testing and rapid iteration. By bridging the gap between technology research and industrial application, the lab aims to accelerate the transformation of technical breakthroughs into real-world solutions, supporting China’s digital economy while contributing Chinese expertise to Schneider Electric’s global innovation network.

Addressing Critical Challenges in Data Center Thermal Management

According to Xu Dong, Vice President of Schneider Electric and Head of Key Power China Center, “The core value of innovation lies in its alignment with market needs and its ability to deliver tangible benefits to customers. The Thermal Management Innovation Lab is designed to overcome critical bottlenecks from technology to application, creating a closed-loop system for performance, energy efficiency, and full-scenario testing. It helps customers manage technical risks and optimize operational costs amid increasingly complex data center thermal challenges.”

Comprehensive Capabilities for End-to-End Validation

The lab has expanded its space by 50% and now features a complete testing platform for air, liquid, and hybrid cooling systems, supporting performance verification, scenario simulation, and customized solution development.

  • Full-link system testing: From component-level verification to system-level optimization, the lab offers extreme climate simulation from -40°C to 55°C, megawatt-scale liquid cooling performance testing, and system-level hybrid cooling validation. This ensures optimal efficiency and stability across integrated systems.

  • Full-scenario simulation: The lab can replicate real-world operating conditions and dynamic load variations, enabling early identification of potential risks and ensuring reliable project delivery.

  • Customized solution development: Agile transformation processes allow rapid performance verification of emerging technologies and customized integration for client-specific equipment, shortening deployment cycles while maintaining high reliability.

As one of Schneider Electric’s three core global thermal management R&D bases, the Shanghai lab has received ETL certification from Intertek, confirming its international-standard testing and management systems. Combined with Schneider Electric’s megawatt-scale UPS lab established in 2023, the company now operates an integrated R&D ecosystem covering both power distribution and thermal management. This system-level capability matrix directly addresses the challenges of high-density smart computing, providing comprehensive technical validation and rapid solution deployment.

China as a Global Innovation Engine

With over 30 years of presence in China, Schneider Electric continues to increase R&D investment locally. The inauguration of the Thermal Management Innovation Lab underscores the strategic depth of the “China Center” initiative and reinforces Schneider Electric’s commitment to integrating innovative practices with China’s high-quality development agenda. Moving forward, the company aims to leverage local R&D expertise to drive the global evolution of digital infrastructure, creating smarter, more reliable, and energy-efficient computing solutions.
