India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program has reportedly experienced a major change in its engine competition, with Pratt & Whitney stepping away from consideration and General Electric (GE) emerging as the leading candidate with its F414 engine.

The development highlights the complex challenges surrounding fifth-generation fighter development, particularly the balance between advanced engine technology, export control regulations, and India’s demand for greater domestic manufacturing capability.

Pratt & Whitney Exit Changes AMCA Engine Competition

Pratt & Whitney was previously considered one of the strongest candidates for the AMCA fighter engine program due to its experience developing advanced military propulsion systems, including the F135 engine used on the F-35 Lightning II program.

However, technology transfer requirements became a major obstacle. India has consistently sought extensive technology sharing to support local production, maintenance, and future upgrades under its “Make in India” defense strategy.

Advanced fighter engine technologies, including full-authority digital engine control systems (FADEC), thermal management technologies, and specialized materials for high-temperature operation, are often subject to strict export control regulations.

The U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) framework limits the transfer of certain sensitive defense technologies, creating difficulties in meeting India’s expectations for full technology access.

Pratt & Whitney Faces Additional Pressure from Commercial Engine Issues

Beyond export restrictions, Pratt & Whitney has also faced significant challenges with its commercial aviation engine business.

The company’s geared turbofan (GTF) engine family, including the PW1000G series used on aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo, has experienced durability issues involving gearbox components and other technical areas.

These problems resulted in increased maintenance requirements, aircraft groundings, and higher repair costs for airlines.

Industry observers suggest that Pratt & Whitney’s commercial engine challenges may have reduced its ability to commit resources to a complex military engine development program requiring extensive customization and technology cooperation.

GE F414 Gains Momentum Through Existing Indian Partnership

General Electric’s F414 engine has gained a stronger position due to its existing relationship with India’s aerospace industry.

The F414 engine has already been selected to power India’s Tejas Mk2 fighter aircraft, and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has accumulated experience related to engine integration and production activities.

GE’s proposal reportedly includes approximately 80% technology transfer and the establishment of local maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities in India.

Although this level of technology sharing does not fully satisfy India’s original goal of complete technology transfer, it may represent a more practical compromise compared with alternatives restricted by export regulations.

Engine Capability Remains a Key Challenge for AMCA

The choice of engine will directly influence the performance and development timeline of India’s AMCA fighter.

The F414 engine provides approximately 98 kN of thrust, which is proven in fourth-generation and 4.5-generation fighter applications. However, analysts note that a true fifth-generation fighter typically requires higher thrust levels to achieve advanced capabilities such as sustained supercruise performance and improved payload efficiency.

If AMCA adopts the F414 engine, India may need to accept certain performance limitations during the early stages of development or pursue future upgrades with a more powerful propulsion system.

Other potential international partners, including European engine manufacturers, could theoretically provide alternatives, but similar technology transfer challenges may remain due to international export control policies.

India’s Aircraft Manufacturing Strategy Faces Additional Challenges

The AMCA program also faces difficulties beyond engine development.

India’s aircraft manufacturing sector is attempting to expand private-sector participation, with companies such as Tata Group, Bharat Forge, and Larsen & Toubro becoming increasingly involved in defense manufacturing projects.

However, these companies have limited experience in designing and producing advanced fighter aircraft compared with established aerospace manufacturers.

The Indian government has emphasized cost competitiveness and industrial participation as important factors in selecting future AMCA production partners.

This approach reflects India’s broader strategy of combining foreign technology cooperation with domestic manufacturing development.

Impact on Global Aerospace and Defense Supply Chains

The AMCA engine competition demonstrates the challenges faced by emerging aerospace powers seeking independent fighter development capabilities.

Modern military engines remain among the most difficult technologies to develop, requiring expertise in:
