June 9, 2026 – China – ABB has officially launched the 2026 ABB Startup Challenge, inviting Chinese startups to develop innovative AI-driven solutions aimed at overcoming technical challenges in industrial automation. The competition focuses on making automation engineering and maintenance simpler, faster, and more efficient.
In the era of deep integration between artificial intelligence (AI) and industrial automation, engineers often face complex, error-prone, and time-consuming tasks when programming, commissioning, or troubleshooting automation systems. ABB’s challenge aims to leverage AI to reduce the technical barrier for automation products, enabling customers to focus on machine innovation and optimized operations.

The competition is open to Chinese startups to develop AI solutions that can act as “technical experts”. These solutions should assist engineers in:
PLC programming and drive commissioning
Fault diagnosis and troubleshooting
Routine maintenance
Solutions should address at least one of the following typical industrial scenarios:
Scenario 1 – OEM Engineering Assistance
Engineers from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are familiar with their machines but may lack deep expertise in ABB automation products like variable frequency drives, servo systems, and PLCs. During system commissioning, engineers often spend excessive time consulting technical manuals, testing multiple configurations, or seeking support from ABB experts.
AI solutions can interact with engineers to clarify objectives, monitor real-time equipment status, automatically suggest commissioning steps, and even generate ready-to-use parameter configurations.
Scenario 2 – On-site Fault Diagnosis
When equipment malfunctions, engineers at end-user sites may struggle to troubleshoot using only fault codes and alarm messages due to limited knowledge of ABB products.
AI solutions can communicate with engineers, access equipment fault and operational data, and analyze supporting materials such as images and videos. The system can then generate step-by-step troubleshooting guidance or propose feasible solutions.
ABB expects solutions to:
Adapt to various ABB automation products
Integrate ABB technical knowledge and learn from customer operational experience
Learn from both structured manuals and unstructured, fragmented knowledge
Continuously improve through iterative learning
Ensure information security and support local deployment
Startups are also encouraged to address critical industrial AI challenges, such as:
Adapting AI to industrial environments with limited and low-quality data
Efficient training to achieve expert-level performance
Minimizing AI resource consumption while maintaining high performance
The winners of the 2026 ABB Startup Challenge will receive:
200,000 RMB to develop a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) in collaboration with ABB China Motion Division
SynerLeap membership: ABB’s open innovation platform, providing exposure to ABB, partners, and potential customers. Membership benefits include:
Direct networking with ABB experts, startups, and partners
Access to pilot projects and proof-of-concept (PoC) funding
Invitations to workshops, events, and seminars organized by ABB and SynerLeap
The 2026 ABB Startup Challenge represents a strategic opportunity for Chinese startups to integrate AI with industrial automation, driving efficiency, innovation, and digital transformation in the sector.
